Here is a quick and easy way to practice syllables with your class. This power point displays a picture, the word, and the answer. Students say the word and hold up that many syllables with their fingers. Give the mouse a click to see each syllable in the word appear. With another mouse click, a number will appear telling students the total number of syllables in the word. Many of the pictures are animated by moving on the page.
Why is it important to teach syllables? When readers break words into syllables, the words become easier to decode. Understanding syllables and learning to segment words not only helps children master phonics, but these skills also play a vital role in learning to spell, read and pronounce words correctly.
