As my kids and I were preparing for the NWEA-MAPS test, I noticed that one of the areas I hadn’t put much thought into was the area of “How many words are in a given sentence?”.
What activities were there to try?
Unfortunately I didn’t find any that gave my kids a hands on approach. My assistant Sheryl (who is amazing, by the way) and I brainstormed and came up with a brilliant plan using simple classroom items. I even splurged and bought my kiddos some cute spring manipulatives to use also.
In this set, I have included printable manipulatives to use, but feel free to use something you have on hand (blocks, counters, erasers, BINGO dots), or hit the dollar spot at your local Target or Dollar Tree and add a little something new to your endless collection of manipulitives. If you wish to use a recording sheets, or you can use this as a formal assessment by using the included assessment forms.
