Engage your students in this in-depth culminating activity in which they participate in a mock trial regarding the American Revolution. For the trial, the American Revolution has been charged with misleading the American public by presenting itself as a true revolution. What will your class decide? To what extent did the American Revolution truly represent change? Students get to take on the role of either a member of the defense team, prosecution team, or one of the 14 historical characters invited as witnesses.
This lesson includes 14 content rich witness affidavits based on real historical figures (complete with witness character guide preparation form). With these, students will get to explore different viewpoints on the Revolution from the military aspect to the impact on various minority groups in society. Ready-to-use scaffolds are provided to help lawyers prepare for opening and closing statements along with cross and direct examination. Directions are included for the teacher in how to set up and allocate roles. A detailed rubric is also provided.
