In this activity, students working individually or in groups are presented a set of 10 test tubes. Each test tube contains an amount of sugar that is present in 12 oz. of a common beverage. Simple instructions are provided to prepare test tubes for 10 common beverages. The test tubes are simply labeled with a letter. Students are provided the names of the beverages on a separate sheet. They have to match the particular beverage with the test tube containing the appropriate amount of sugar. Students, as well as teachers, are often amazed at the amount of sugar contained in only 12 oz. of various soft drinks. There is a lot of flexibility built into this exercise in that teachers can easily substitute and/or vary the number of beverages.
