These same activities (with additional forms and instructions) are found in my product: How Things Are Made/Common Core Aligned Full Day for Your Sub. Check the preview to know for certain if the reading level is appropriate for your needs. Feedback and followers much appreciated!
In these activities:
Students will read each of the comprehension passages: Natural Resources, How to Make Erasers, How to Make Pencils, How to Make Paper, and How to Make Brownies. Following each are comprehension questions to be completed. Students will draw pictures to illustrate the sequence of steps in making each product. Students will make a Venn Diagram to compare the process of making pencils and erasers.
Students will brainstorm what happens when directions are not carefully followed ("what if the factory forgot to put the soles on our shoes?") They will follow directions to cut out and make a ("what is it?") machine. They will write their own "recipes" for making an item of their choice. They will make a magic potion. They will begin writing their own book on "How To Make Things" - and add products and ideas throughout the school year.
Students will practice addition and subtraction (with regrouping), odd and even numbers, and review "How to Make Things" concepts by playing the "How to Make it" Board Game
Students will put vocabulary words in ABC order, look up in the dictionary and generate own sentences using these words. Students will review vocabulary with suggested games at the end of the day.
