Note to Teacher: This resource is what I used to teach How-To informative and explanatory writing. I am extremely proud of this unit since it is more rigor than just having our students write a simple “how-to.” After you teach simple How-To’s (brush your teeth, make a sandwich, build a snowman etc.) and you want to push your students to think of a “big idea topic.” Essentially this is a topic that can be written as a complete book. Therefore, I created this unit that expands on the simple “how-to” writing into a “How-to-BOOK.” For example, we took how to build a snowman… and I model how this sparked the idea that I could write an entire book on winter activities, such as “How to have Fun in the Winter” where building a snowman is just one chapter of my book.
I further taught a lesson on brainstorming more big idea topics with my student, where I model how I to take their idea and push them to think of 2 other similar ideas (chapters) and how they are related (book). Some of their ideas were great and personal to their 6-7 year life. How-to… be a great student, get your parents to buy you things, make friends, not disappoint your teacher when you have a substitute, have a jolly Christmas, stay safe and healthy, etc. Having them come with big idea topic was a lot of fun!
