“How to Make a Mummy the Ancient Egyptian Way” (using Cornish game hens) is a one-month mini-unit that hooks kids the entire time. This engaging social studies lesson is also a platform for teaching or reviewing process writing and transitions. Included you’ll find Egyptian spells from the Book of the Dead, ideas for symbols or amulets, eight pages of specific procedure on how to mummify Cornish game hens, a supply list, note pages, a five-page template for writing a procedural essay, a list of spatial and procedural transition words, and a rubric. I’ve noted tips for what works well and what to avoid (I’ve made all the mistakes for you) in making your experience a pleasant, successful adventure. There’s room for lengthening or shortening the timeframe depending on your need. Have fun!
