Before teaching place value with multi-digit numbers, I wanted to first teach my students how to read these numbers. I think doing this first will also help students to write these numbers in word form and expanded form.
1. First teach students that multi-digit numbers are broken up into periods. The example provided broke the multi-digit number up by the ones period and the thousands period.
2. Place the second multi-digit number on the board. (436,985). Have students to predict how to read that number. Have them share with their partner or you can conduct a class discussion on how to read that number.
3, Then the PowerPoint will underline the 3 digits in the ones period. Have the students to read that three-digit number.
4. The PowerPoint will point an arrow towards the comma in the number, which represents "thousands".
5. Lastly, the PowerPoint will underline the 3-digits in the ones period. Have the students to read that 3-digit number.
