Looking for a way to encourage critical reading skills and creative writing all in one? Here is a great lesson plan to help you do just that. Students use story books to analyze the elements of a tall tale: a main character with a special power or talent; figurative language (especially similes, metaphors, hyperbole); a force or problem that needs to be overcome; a resolution to that problem. They record their findings on a frame, which is included. In the second lesson, they have the opportunity to create alternate endings to another tall tale. Last, students use the original frame to plan and then write their own tall tales.
