How To Writing: In this estimated 4 day lesson plan, students are introduced to How To, or procedural, writing. They first engage in giving directions to the teacher for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The teacher carries out the directions exactly the way the students give them to him/her. They redirect the teacher as they see changes need to be made. This engaging activity helps students see the importance of clarity in directions. They then analyze a set of directions to see what authors include to make directions clear and then complete a class How To writing for a PB and J sandwich using what they have learned. Finally, students choose a topic of their own to complete a How To writing including revising/editing and publishing.
