This 3 week unit will help you teach your first grade students to write how-to books!

The unit is designed to be taught toward the beginning or middle of the year but can be used anytime you want to teach students how to write how-to books (procedural nonfiction).

In this unit, students will learn how to:

- Plan and write a how-to book to teach a reader how to perform a specific task

- Write a list of materials for the how-to book, and add commas to the list

- Write with detailed steps and transition words

- Create detailed, labeled pictures to teach the reader

- Write an introduction and a conclusion to a how-to book

- Revise and edit independently and with a partner

This unit includes:

- 15 detailed minilessons that will last about 3 weeks

- Daily language arts/grammar exercises that complement the minilessons

- Clear unit goals, daily objectives, and Common Core alignment

- Posters, visual aids, a writing stages display, and other materials to go with the minilessons (all color materials also have black and white versions included)

- Ideas for technology integration
