This packet is designed to teach students the basic process of how a bill becomes a law. The first pages include a card sorting game with hints that will help students correctly organize ten steps explaining how a bill becomes a law. The following pages include a double-sided worksheet that students can use to record their answers from the card sorting game and then demonstrate what they have learned with comprehension questions, picture matching/drawing, and summary writing.
There are three versions of the worksheet attached so that you can present a single collaborative activity but offer a differentiated product for the diverse learners in your classroom. Worksheets are for students who may fall into one of three categories:
• RED group – labeled (R): emerging English language learners (students working on translating words or simple sentences)
• WHITE group – labeled (W): students requiring modified assignments; expanding English language learners (students working on writing sentences or simple paragraphs)
• BLUE group – labeled (B): students able to complete work at or above grade level; bridging English language learners (students working on writing multiple paragraphs or preparing for reclassification)
You will find an answer key attached.
