How a Body Fossil is Made
This is meant to be a self-contained workshop lesson on how fossils form on Earth. During the mini-lesson you will make sure that students know the necessary vocabulary and show them a short video on fossils from YouTube. The working portion of the class will involve students creating short cartoons to show how fossils form. They will also complete a “Will It Make a Fossil?” worksheet to practice identifying the necessary conditions to make a fossil. Finally, the debriefing will consist of checking students’ cartoons for accuracy and discussing their answers to the worksheet (there will be many good answers). The class will pull all of the information together into an anchor chart showing how fossils are formed.
Two versions of an assessment are included for measuring student understanding.
The module also includes a reading passage for re-teaching or for students who are absent for the class instruction.
