In this highly-engaging, authentic, and empowering lesson, students learn the process for how bills become laws per the United States Constitution. Students view an included PowerPoint presentation to understand the different steps that all bills must proceed through before they become laws, then engage in an authentic competition where students propose ideas to make the school a better place. Students conduct research, develop a plan, then propose a solution to fix a current school problem or add a new element to enhance the school. Student writing proceeds through the committee process to simulate Congressional committees and one winner emerges to meet with the Principal one-on-one to discuss the idea!
So far this process has yielded new drinking fountains, a school mascot costume, an open-seating lunch policy, as well as many others! Have your students take ownership of their school and, at the same time, learn the process of law creation!
Included is a PowerPoint presentation, detailed teacher instruction page, detailed student handout (editable) to introduce the program, and bill number worksheet (to assign bill numbers to students)
