The purpose of this Power Point is to introduce students to the concepts of 1 million, and 1 billion as they look at some things that they are familiar with such as money, sand, and outer space objects.
Students in Math and Science sometimes have no idea what very large numbers such as millions or billions mean. One of the best ways to teach the concept is to ask students to imagine what they think is equal to millions or billions. Using real-life examples gives students something to make connections to. In this Power Point, students not only imagine large numbers, but also are introduced to how Science and Math connections might be made with astronomical and currency equivalencies.
Additional ideas: As a homework assignment, before using the Power Point, ask students to bring a picture or some other representation of what a million or a billion is equal to. Before sharing what has been brought in, ask students to brainstorm things that there might be millions or billions of.
