What educators are saying

This is so good! The kids loved it and there are large and small parts, so everyone can engage at their comfort level. It is quite long, so be sure to allow enough time to finish!

Description

Rudyard Kipling's "Elephant's Child" adapted by long-time Scholastic & Storyworks playwright Mack Lewis. "How the Elephant Got Its Trunk" shows how Elephant's Child's insatiable curiosity gets him in trouble with the Crocodile but ultimately helps him get a much more useful nose. The story is told in a unique, school-appropriate way (Kipling's original is much about spanking), it encourages students to experiment with various fun dialects (British, Hip-hop, 1920's mobster), and it sets an African vibe by using Swahili vocabulary. It includes parts for ten actors and includes two leveled versions, one for younger students (grades 3-5) and another for older students (grades 5-8). Each comes with a comprehension activity, key, teacher notes, and extension ideas. The original purchaser is licensed to download one complete set for use in his or her own classroom each year.
