'The Grinch' is a great Dr. Seuss book/movie for older students and this activity to go along with 'The Grinch' is a fantastic way to learn new vocabulary. Included in this activity pack you will find a sort, a word search, and answer keys.
My students have been struggling to understand large vocabulary within their grade level texts. Also, when writing about a character, their writing is often full of simple words such nice, funny, and mean. 'How the Grinch Changed' has helped my students learn about character development while expanding their vocabularies and enhancing their dictionary skills.
Read the story "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss to your students. After the story, students will sort 16 words into the categories "The Grinch: Beginning of the Story" and "The Grinch: End of the story." The 16 words used are a mixture of simple words, such as kind, and more complex words, such as benevolent. When students come across a complex word, they are encouraged to use a dictionary to discover the meaning. When they have completed the activity, I let my students listen to the song "Mr. Grinch" to see if they heard any of the words from the sort in the song. (Most of the words used come from this song). A word search using the same words from the sort has also been included so that students can continue practicing the vocabulary from 'The Grinch!'
