It reinforces Lesson 37 in the Reading Horizons program in which students are taught when to double the final consonant before adding a suffix (ing, ed, er, est) or when the base word remains the same. Three examples are given for each of the two phonetic rules #1 and #2.
The knight clipart represents "guardians" after the vowel. So kids can easily see that any guardian standing alone must be doubled before the suffix can be added. Likewise, when there are two guardians after the vowel, no changes to the base word are necessary.
