PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a small group reader's theater is for 4 students. It is based on the idea that, when a student encounters something difficult, they should not give up but persevere! Students often struggle with wanting to give up and I assigned one or two of the ones struggling the most to perform this script for the class. In the script, Michael is having trouble in math and wants to give up. His friends tell him to keep thinking, keep working, keep trying and learn from his mistakes. They remind him that perseverance is working even when it is hard or challenging. They talk about what their teacher tries to tell them and that a blank paper or board is the only thing that is really upsetting to a teacher because it means you aren’t trying. They compare the brain to muscles, talk about having a positive attitude, learning from mistakes, and that it is okay to not know the answer if you keep working on it. By the end, they give Michael a challenge to persevere for 2 weeks on every problem with a positive attitude. His friends believe it will help Michael become a Perseverance Master! They even agree to do it with him. There is a writing assignment for the students to do at the bottom of the last page. I challenge my students to try the same thing as the students in the script. I use reader's theaters to encourage my students to practice fluency. It is a fun way to do something that they need. My scripts are in black and white with only the occasional color picture on front so they are cheaper and easier to photo copy. The problem with many other reader's theaters is that students spend a lot of time waiting for their part. When you have a small group they get more practice and you get less off task behaviors. My name is Melanie Whitesides but my store name is Wonbyone and I hope that your students enjoy this script as much as mine did. I did not advertise this for 3rd grade but my higher group of 3rd graders were fine performing this. They underlined potential trouble words as they read it. If you like this script look for other scripts that teach a lesson at my site. Let me know how things go!
