We all want to give a band concert that showcases the hard work of the students, pleases the audience and shows administration our professional qualifications through performance. How do we piece together things learned through hours of rehearsals and transform it into a dynamic concert that keeps inspiring our students?
The following pages gives a checklist for choosing the right literature, analyzing its contents and offering objectives for each grade. This is a simplified curriculum map. Since your school may begin instruments at a different grade than others, I've listed each grade as “Playing Year _.” I've also included sample concert programming, musicianship points and a list noting what students should have learned in order to progress confidently into the next playing year.
