This five-page lesson includes clear, step-by-step instructions for students and teachers to take in order to create a well-organized, well-supported opinion essay. There is a color-coded model graphic organizer and a color-coded model 5-paragraph opinion. There's a blank graphic organizer and sentence frames for the reluctant writer and SEI, ELL students (or all students). The graphic organizer takes the shape of a three-legged stool. I like to ask students whether a stool with one leg will stand on its own. Then I ask whether a stool with two legs will stand on its own. Finally, will a stool will three legs stand? Yes, therefore a strong opinion should have three reasons. Students then fill in each leg part of the organizer with a reason to support their opinion.
