I’ve created this tutorial for teachers or students who may need to find some innovative ways to create practice tracks with accompaniment and parts for their musicians without using the piano. Maybe their accompaniment, skills aren’t great, maybe they don’t have access to a keyboard. Either way, you’ll find everything you need here.
Disclaimer: You’ll need two different technology applications to do this. One is a paid app ($4-but SO, so worth it) in the iTunes store (not yet available for android), and the other is a program that can manipulate midi, like GarageBand or Audacity. I’ll be explaining how to do it with GarageBand because it is tremendously more user friendly, but if you’re already familiar with another program, you’ll end up with the same end result.
If you’re in a 1:1 school and all kids have GarageBand, these practice tracks are SO AWESOME. It allows the kids the ability to play their voice alone, any combination of voices, all voices with one voice dominant, or just piano accompaniment. Plus, they can see measure numbers, which makes it super easy to rehearse particular sections. But if kids won’t be using GarageBand, or if they won’t have their own computers to work on, you can still export each track to mp3’s, no problem.
