Using three handouts, teach students how to perform a close reading of a graphic novel. A page from American Born Chinese is used to teach students useful graphic novel terminology (emanata, graphic weight, etc.), and to show them how traditional writing techniques like character development and symbolism are used in graphic novels just as they are in traditional novels. A second handout breaks the process of close reading a graphic novel panel into two steps with helpful prompts. A third handout gives students an example of a thoughtful close reading of a panel from American Born Chinese (The Monkey King returns to his cave).
