Students struggling to identify or understand theme?
This PowerPoint provides an introduction for finding theme in stories. Students are introduced to finding theme through the main character, conflict, and subjects (motifs) present within a story. The PowerPoint can be easily altered for individual classrooms.
The accompanying Cornell Notes correspond directly to the PowerPoint and are fill-in-the blank. Students are given opportunities to respond meaningfully to information and teachers can take opportunities to check for understanding.
A guided practice activity with subjects is also included. 16 pictures, 4 to a subject, can be used to help students make subjects into themes. For instance, freedom :: freedom is a human right.
