Use these files to teach students how to find theme in a simple three step, easy to remember process. You can use this lesson with virtually any text, although this one is really easy to incorporate into your To Kill a Mockingbird unit.
This is a 3 page lesson plan and a 3 page handout for students (or you can print it and use it as your overhead). The handout is a student friendly version of the lesson plan. It includes the independent reading / reading log focus for the day (should you opt to use it), the aim, the do-now, a little organizer and space for the do-now response, the key points from the mini-lesson (including definitions, etc), and even pivotal questions, and the summation.
The lesson plan itself is incredibly detailed. It even includes the expected responses to the do-now question. Also, the lesson is COMMON CORE ALIGNED and includes modifications if you are teaching in a classroom with special needs.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy this lesson and the handouts (which I always use as overheads). Enjoy! Also, please check out my other lesson plans and activities for To Kill a Mockingbird!
