This is an emergent reader book, by Sara Ipatenco, that encourages children to recognize the simple sight words such as “the,” “a” “in,” “put” and “your.” It also encourages children to use the pictures to figure out unknown words. The book can also be used as step-by-step directions to plant candy cane seeds! Provide each student with a small bowl, a cup or so of sugar and three tic tacs, which are the candy cane “seeds.” Read the book and follow the directions. After school, take the “seeds” out of each bowl and replace them with mini candy canes. The children will be so surprised to see that their candy canes grew overnight!! I’ve included a black and white version that students can color themselves and a color version that you can print, laminate and use as a classroom book! I’ve also included both a color and black and white candy cane seed envelope and a writing prompt sheet to go with the activity. Enjoy and Merry Christmas!!
