A fabulous unit designed to immerse children in the art of writing haiku poetry and inspire them to write quality haikus of their own. Looking to engage and motivate your children? Then this is for you. Comprehensive and varied, the unit is packed full of fun, with resources that have been tried and tested in my own Year 5 classroom very successfully.
Over the two weeks children progress towards earning the title of ‘Apprentice Haiku Master’. Beginning with reading and exploring the work of haiku masters, they then move to initial experiments with writing poetry with syllabic patterns, to writing haikus. Once they can write a haiku, they then explore writing in different haiku forms and using the haiku technique of narrowing focus. Their final and ultimate challenge is to use this technique write a sequence haiku. At the end of the unit they are then awarded with a certificate confirming their status as ‘Apprentice Haiku Master’. Plenty here to motivate and inspire.
