Do your students leave out important steps when writing directions or instructions?
This freebie explanatory writing (or "how-to" writing) lesson will help students remember to add LOTS of detail and specifics!
In this lesson for grades 1-3, students write directions to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Once they have published a copy, the teacher acts as an "alien" or "Amelia Bedelia" to act out the instructions with hilarious results. The students who forgot to tell their reader to open the jar or to use the knife to spread the peanut butter likely won't make those same mistakes again after seeing you act it out!
This is a fun but memorable way to reinforce how to write very specific directions. You can read more about how I taught this explanatory writing assignment on my blog, Luckeyfrog's Lilypad:
The download includes simple publishing paper with handwriting lines and room for illustrations, as well as a rubric for assessment of your students' explanatory writing skills.
