Several years ago, a colleague was taking their first band to concert festival (a.k.a. "Large Group Performance Evaluation") and wanted some advice. I responded to the e-mail by typing up what I did, and they did great. Recently, another colleague was asking me what I did, and while I was preparing some other work, I ran across the e-mail where I describe "my" process--which is of course an accumulation of input from my teachers, mentors, colleagues, and years of refinement. It really works.
Subsequently, I have watched many good bands rehearse their bands in the 6 minute sight reading drill. They have wasted a lot of time and not pulled the best out of their students. After years of study and refinement, I still stand by my method!
