This three-page document/handout is designed to deliver to students when you are teaching how to read, understand, and annotate a poem.
I have found that try as I might to teach the techniques of analyzing poetry, the techniques work better when you model the activity. It doesn't matter what poem you choose, though I would suggest a poem you have not analyzed before. (It is difficult to pretend you have not read the poem before. You want students to truly feel you are exploring the poem with them for the first time. Be brave and show them you can do what you are asking of them.)
Wether it is on the overhead/document camera, the whiteboard, or just a handout, going through the poem in realtime with the student is an invaluable process that will engage students and show them how it is done.
