We all know the best way to teach reading - and develop life long readers - is to have students read great novels. This is easier said than done, but well worth the time and effort. This simple outline explains the program our 5th grade classrooms have been using successfully for three years. It includes information on student choice, book club meetings, independent reading time, written responses, assessment and possible titles. Common Core standards call for participation in discussions as well as providing evidence for ideas and comprehending challenging text. This program could be used with any level elementary or middle school class. You just need some great books and a motivated teacher!
