10 Rules with examples and explanations for how to correctly quote poetry.
This 1-2 day mini-lesson comes with a quick activity that allows students to put the rules into practice. As a variation, after reviewing the rules and examples, students can work together to complete the practice activity, and share answers with the class for review. As an extension, students can practice writing examples of each quote incorporation type using the text of a poem they are currently analyzing as they prepare for essay writing.
I have found this lesson to be invaluable when teaching my students how to effectively write about poetry.
The examples for the mini-lesson have been taken from Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner," so it would also make a great supplemental lesson during a "Rime" unit.
