A student-friendly set of guidelines to common literary tropes to help students who ask, "But, Miss, how did you figure that out?" These guidelines can be applied to film as well. Includes examples from canonical literature. Fair warning-- after learning these rules, my students would often complain that they can't "just read" anymore because they are always examining the work for clues to meaning. This complaint is the best confirmation I have that these scaffolds help students to read critically-- which is my goal.
The teacher guide of what to say follows the full page versions of the rules. The full page versions are linked to bookmarks so that you can jump from rule to explanation. The explanations are written in my voice and are labeled "SAY". You should, of course, deliver these explanations as you see fit.
