This tool is comprised of a series of the types of questions that experienced readers answer as they read. I created it by noting the questioning process that I use when I read. Then, I used Common Core standards to refine and strengthen the questions, which specifically address author decision-making and how text structures and literary techniques work together to craft the reading experience.
This tool is too large to use on its own, but it can be jig-sawed, or questions can be drawn from it to create worksheets. I have tried to upload it in a format that will allow you to customize.

Here are the two introductory paragraphs:
Authors are like engineers--every decision is precise so that all pieces of a story work together to create a carefully crafted experience, but authors rarely give you the pieces in order--they will only give you each piece at just the right time to provoke your curiosity and to build tension. You must fit all the pieces back together. And, authors will only show you as much of each piece as they want you to see, and this creates ambiguity that makes you think for yourself. So, there are two stories: the one the author writes on the page and the one that you create in your mind.
To build that story in your mind, you must: engage, read for future, keep track of all the parts and put them back together in the proper order, and resolve ambiguity to make meaning. And, you must flesh out the story by adding your own interpretations and additions--as Toni Morrison says, “When you read, you must bring something the party.”
