Beginning ESL students who speak Spanish as their first language will be motivated to read, write, and speak English with this unit! Omar, Isabella, and their friends go to school, play soccer, go to parties, and talk with their friends. While reading about them, students will learn to say the things they really want to learn how to say! Listening, speaking, reading, and writing are integrated from lesson one. Using 35 lessons, the same characters continue to build on events from previous lessons. New vocabulary is translated into Spanish in the margin to provide scaffolding to aid comprehension and retention of new vocabulary. New vocabulary is presented in context (a highly effective strategy) using highly familiar situations the students want to read about. Using background knowledge they already possess, comprehension and vocabulary acquisition are greatly accelerated (which is a research-based method of instruction). Your students will be excited about reading each new lesson to find out what happens next! Ideas for teaching the lessons and extension acitivites are included. Please download the first few lessons and try them with your students!
