This is a teaching aid that assists beginning readers with learning how to use their knowledge of blends and letter sounds to approach or sound out words they may never have seen before, no matter how big or small.
The sheet is folded in half lengthwise or vertically. First, the child will review the right half of the sheet with the teacher or tutor's help. Then, the sheet can be turned over and the child can practice using a colored pencil to divide the "hard" word into blends they recognize and distinct letter sounds. After physically breaking the "hard" words down, they follow the steps they have learned and see how it works. Once they say each word, the teacher can give them more information about the word and congratulate them!
Using this list is optional, it can build students confidence when they see that they can sound out even big, hard words well using what they have learned about letter sounds and blends. If it does not, then have them try with smaller words first and allow their reading confidence to build up.
