Product Description

This perfectly sequenced worksheet bundle provides the scaffolding you need to help students master the skill of using dialogue in their writing.

The process is broken down into easy to follow steps and each worksheet provides practice to reinforce the skill.

Students will learn how to use dialogue in their own writing through simply following each step outlined in this packet.

This Bundle includes:

- What are quotation marks? (Page 3)

- What do I capitalize? (Page 4)

- Where does the comma go? Part 1 (Page 5)

- Where does the comma go? Part 2 (Page 6)

- The two most common ways to attribute the speaker (Page 7)

- When do I not use a comma? (Page 8)

- Using words instead of 'said' (Page 9)

- New Lines & Indentation (Page 10)

- Guided Short Dialogue Practice (Pages 11 - 12)

- Guided Dialogue Practice Reviewing Key Concepts (Pages 13 - 18)

- Write Your Own Dialogue Practice Template (Page 19)

- 55 Words Instead of Said Poster - Black & White Version (Page 20)

Suggestion:

I usually run this as a packet and give each child their own copy. I typically go over the "teaching point" at the top of the page together as a whole group, that way I can elaborate and answer any questions. I then have kids silently complete the page on their own as I circulate and assist when needed. When a student finishes the page I tell them to pull out a book and silently read as they wait for me to come by and check their work. If they mastered the page I stamp or star the page. If not, I confer and clarify. The child then corrects their mistakes.

I'm careful to make sure that every child has mastered the current page independently before I move on to the next page. Each page introduces a new component that builds upon the previous. The goal is to gradually release from a high level of teacher support/control to independence. By the end of the packet, students have no problem using dialogue in their own stories proficiently.
