This lesson is designed to introduce students to the elements of an effective essay using the 6+1 writing traits and the analogy of planning and building a house. This information could be presented in several ways:
I originally designed this resource the year my 9th grade STEM students went to see LEAFHouse when it was on display at the Solar Decathlon. We talked to some of the students who designed the house, and it was fascinating to hear them describe their design process. The analogy helped my students develop a concrete understanding of each step of the writing process, and the specific details about LEAFHouse really appealed to my students who were interested in green technology.
The included 36-slide PowerPoint does the following:
*introduces the basic terminology of the 6+1 writing traits;
*relates each of the 6+1 traits to a stage in designing LEAFHouse (with illustrations);
*relates each of the 6+1 traits to an essential element of an effective essay with helpful hints for student writers.
