Character sketches are a great way for your students to explore the novel and gain a deeper appreciation for it. This unit guides your students in a step-by-step process to writing the perfect character sketch.
Begin with the real-life character sketch first. I usually do this activity with my students in THE FIRST WEEK of classes. It is an easy way to familiarize them with the theory.
If you have a group that has been together for a long time, you might want to have them do their real-life character sketches on other students in the class. Have them include a picture of the person in their final copy. Post them the walls or your class bulletin boards.
If your group hasn't been together very long, opt for a real-life character sketch of a person they admire such as a friend or family member.
Later in the year, pull out this activity once again and this time have them create a character sketch of someone in a short story or novel.
