This lesson is designed to introduce students to a strategy to help them compose more effective analytical paragraphs using an easy-to-remember format. The activities could be completed in 1-3 class periods, depending on class length. However, this writing strategy is one that my students come back to for every analytical writing assignment. I have used this lesson with students ranging from below-level 9th graders through Advanced Placement 11th graders, and it's definitely had a positive impact on my students' writing ability.
The included PowerPoint walks students through the entire instructional sequence and includes the following elements:
*introduction to the basic terminology associated with the double-chunk paragraph;
*small-group practice with identifying the components of a double-chunk paragraph;
*individual practice in composing a double-chunk paragraph (with suggested student-friendly topics);
*guided peer review of students' double-chunk paragraphs;
*an exit ticket that allows teacher to assess student comprehension and their degree of comfort with the writing process.
The lesson includes multiple opportunities to formatively assess student understanding and addresses various learning styles through the use of manipulatives (also included), color coding, and grouping.
