In this comprehensive packet, students will learn everything there is to know about writing a thesis statement (or claim) that is compelling and clear. Exercises are included after every section,
and there are multiple opportunities to gain experience writing a thesis statement in many different ways. By the completion of this packet, students will be better able to construct not just a thesis statement but also their papers as a whole, as they will gain a better sense of an essay's structure and logical flow.
The packet includes: a deep look at just what theses are and why they’re important; exercises that break down just what goes into writing a thesis statement, including a clear supportable and specific argument and stakes; examples of the many forms theses can take; an introduction to analytical inquiry using the questions how, why,
and who; a thesis formula checklist that students can use when writing their essays.
The packet can be adapted for a wide range of age groups, and has been successfully used with 7th through 12th graders.
