Many teachers or parents can sympathize with the following comment by their students or child when it comes to writing a paper: "I don't know how to start it."
In my experiences, my students can give me plenty of evidence and reasoning details to support an idea; but getting the ball rolling is another game altogether.
In short, a topic sentence is a sentence that provides the central idea of a paragraph. An engaging topic sentence is paramount to writing a solid paragraph. For a topic sentence to be correct it should . . .
a. state the topic
b. state a specific feeling about the topic
This course is intent on helping you create a well-rounded topic sentence to properly begin a a cohesive paragraph.
This course will guide you through eight distinct strategies, which can be utilized when crafting a topic sentence. It is taught through a series of short lectures, which include printable files (pdf file included) if you choose.
It is up to the educator how this resource may best fit their classroom structure. This video can be used on a Smarboard for the students to view as they would the teacher; or the video may be uploaded to a smart device for students to use individually as a introductory or review resource.
Overall, the course has four sections:
a. review and first practice
b. putting it all together topic sentence practice
c. simple quiz (pp. 32 - 40 of pdf file)
d. A final topic sentence writing used in correlation with the puzzler and platforming game, Braid
, by Jonathon Blow. I have talked with the game's creator, who has given me the green light to utilize my play through clips in correlation with the educational activities I create.
