I have been teaching writing for the past 7 years using a version of Step-up-to-Writing with great success.
Step-up-to-Writing uses colors to teach the parts of a paragraph/essay.
With this packet students are given a page for each of the definitions for parts of a paragraph along with hints/ words lists for raising them to a new level instead of the standard sentence structure. (Who doesn't get tired of hearing "That's why Lebron James is my favorite athlete" a thousand times?)
Then students are introduced to idea of using 3 different colors to help them keep track of the parts of a paragraph/essay as well as outline their essay.
In the past four years, after using this packet/program, I have only had 4 students (Out of 327) not pass their writing test with flying colors!
