Product Description
This mini-unit was created to assist in teaching elementary students how to write a procedural text.

Procedural texts are a fun way for students to practice writing non-fiction text. They also provide great practice for using transition words in writing. Finally, procedural texts are a great way to work on verbs, including the use of more exciting verbs (i.e. stack instead of put, etc) and using them to give a command.

I created this unit for my own use in my 2nd grade classroom and I hope that other educators can find it useful as well. During this writing unit we also do a reading unit on procedural texts, immersing students in these how-to activities! I usually introduce procedural texts with read alouds, and even some activities so students can practice following directions. Then we move into the writing portion. We do some as a class, then they get to start working on their own how-to. For publishing, students can publish in the form of a book, with steps on each page. I have also included some side activities and ideas.

This mini-unit includes…
*Why use this mini-unit?
*How to make an ice cream sundae practice page

*Rough draft pages
*Partner revising/editing checklist
*Student examples of final published copies
