Procedure - How to make a 2D bus with wheels that move
The ability to read and follow the steps in a procedure is a very important skill for young children to learn.
Including procedural texts in your classroom literacy program has benefits way beyond simply providing a fun activity.
So much of what we do on a daily basis requires us to follow procedures e.g. cooking, putting together a chair, making a toy model. Some instructions are not always easy to follow. It is important that students be able to follow instructions presented in both text and pictures. Being able to read and follow instructions to achieve something intended is empowering.
Procedural texts can be easily incorporated into a reading program as an independent or group reading activity.
This particular reading task is based upon an activity that involves students in making a 2D bus with wheels that move. It could be incorporated into the program when setting up a display to support learning about road safety, discussing how children travel to school or learning a song such as “The Wheels of the Bus”, for example.
While the activity is a literacy activity rather than a creative activity, children could be encouraged to individualize their buses in a variety of ways that appeal to them.
For this activity you will need to provide, for each student:
• A piece of cardboard for the body of the bus e.g. approx. 21 cm x 10cm (you can cut 3 from one A4 sheet)
• A paper square for the bus driver’s window approx. 4 cm x 4 cm
• Three paper squares for the passengers’ windows approx. 3 cm x 3 cm
• A paper rectangle for the door approx. 3 cm x 8 cm
• Two cardboard circles approx. 5 cm diameter
• Two split pins
In addition to this children will require access to crayons and glue.
You may wish to provide them with other materials such as collage items or magazines.
