Social skills do not come naturally to everyone.
Making and keeping friends is a foundational skill that every child needs to be fluent in. As a child ages, his skill becomes more sophisticated. Knowing this, it is recommended to begin teaching this skill as early as possible. Teachers know that the classroom community is much more harmonious when students have some semblance of friendship. This social story teaches some of the basic skills for making friends. Each step is broken down, defined and given concrete examples. Steps are explained in appropriate terms, using perspective taking, expected behavior and good thoughts/comfortable thoughts. The last few pages provide a summary and
several practice pages to reinforce the skills. Finally, at the very end are additional resources for teachers to use on teaching this topic.
