This module breaks down the art of oratory into four key areas:
- Writing and structuring the speech
- Voice (tone, pitch, pace and volume)
- Body language and facial expression.
Each area is analysed through a speech that students can watch on YouTube. (URLs are included in the module, but if you would like me to send you the clips after you have purchased the product, contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org.) After watching each speech, students analyse it by answering a set of questions carefully crafted to help them understand how to use structure, language, voice and body to deliver a compelling speech.
The four speeches that are analysed are by:
1. Michelle Obama
2. Carl Sagan
3. Evan Mawarire
4. Amy Cuddy.
If you like the module, but are reluctant to use it in your classroom because it will appear to be supportive of one major US political party over another, please contact me and I can customise the module to your needs.
The module ends with two activities:
- Delivering an unprepared speech
- Delivering a prepared speech (with suggested topics).
It also provides a set of tips to help students create a great piece of work.
I have used this module in my own classroom, with outstanding success. My students were fascinated by the deliberate way in which orators use their minds, voices and bodies to deliver a message, and I was astonished by the improvement in my students' own presentations.
