In case you haven't heard...Kevin Karla y La Banda are awesome. They are a brother and sister duo from Chile and they cover popular English songs in SPANISH!
This cloze style practice activity focuses on regular preterite verbs (with the exception of estar, but that's an easy one to explain)...The song featured here is "Hoy Desperté" which is a cover of Katy Perry's Wide Awake. These videos are the best for several reasons, but they work really well with the cloze style because you can play the songs for the students several times and the final time, show them the video (the link is provided on the sheet) and the videos are all really visually striking lyric videos so the students can either check themselves or just use it to sing along....my students absolutely LOVED this.
The back side of the worksheet, the students categorize the conjugated verbs they heard in the song into AR/ER/IR verbs. I tell them that this is basically backwards conjugation. They know their preterite endings and they're now conjugating backwards. It really stretched their thinking process because they have been so used to normal conjugation for the last few years and so this was really helpful for them. After that, they compare and contrast the English chorus from Katy Perry's song and the Spanish translation. They will answer critical thinking questions about why they think the song is not a direct translation, etc.
This really was a great 2 day activity that all of my students seemed to enjoy :) I put 2 days as the duration because it took us 1 day to get through the lyrics and 1 day to answer the questions on the back of the worksheet. You might be able to finish it in one day.
