This activity has proven very popular with my students, and I use a similar one with each novel or play I teach. The concept is familiar to students, but with each novel or play comes a new set of questions. Tape a line down the center of the room. Direct students to move to one side of the room if the statements apply to them. Invite students to share their responses. Some of the statements may be of a sensitive nature, but I have found that students are very eager to share, and it offers them a glimpse as to how the novel or play is not that far off from their own lives. It's a great way to get them excited about reading (for at least one class period!).
