Four articles for students to write about news happening in Huck's home town will help keep students reading so they can find out the details they need to include in each article. Each article has a detailed description of work and a clear rubric so grading is easy because students clearly understand their grade targets. The final newspaper project is also included with its own detailed rubric and allows students to use the articles they have already written while adding an obituary, advertisements, and new articles to keep their interest and make the newspaper or newsletter appear realistic.
My students include below grade-level readers, but the novel was a district requirement so having news article projects kept them on task, kept them practicing their writing skills, and kept them working toward a common goal - completion of the newspaper. My kids love this, and yours will, too.
These are so much better than daily multiple-choice quizzes because they assess a greater depth of understanding.
